What does core aeration actually do?

A core aerator pulls thousands of small plugs of soil out of the lawn and leaves them on the surface to break down. Those holes let air, water, and fertilizer get down where the roots are, instead of running off a surface packed hard as a driveway. Roots follow that opening and grow deeper, which is what makes a lawn hold up in a dry August. It is one of the two turf services inside our lawn care program, and on most third acre properties around here the machine work is done in well under an hour.

What is thatch and when does it need removing?

Thatch is the layer of dead stems and roots that builds up between the green grass and the soil. A thin layer is normal and even helpful. Once it gets thick it acts like a sponge on top of your lawn, holding water at the surface, blocking what you spread, and giving insects a place to live. Dethatching strips that mat off so the turf is sitting on soil again. The University of Illinois Extension explains how to check yours in its guide to managing thatch in lawns, and we check it as a matter of course when we walk a property.

Why aerate and overseed at the same time?

Because seed needs soil contact to grow, and a mature lawn does not give it any. Broadcast seed over an established lawn and most of it sits on top of the thatch and dies. Aerate first and every one of those holes becomes a protected pocket where seed sits against real soil, holds moisture, and takes. That is why the two are sold together instead of separately. New seedlings need feeding once they are up, so this pairs naturally with our lawn fertilization program to carry the new grass through its first season.

When is the best time to aerate and overseed?

Fall is the sweet spot in this part of Illinois. The soil is still warm enough for seed to germinate, the air has cooled off, weed pressure has dropped, and the new grass gets months to establish before summer heat tests it. Spring is the second choice and it works, but new seedlings have less time to root before the hot stretch arrives. How often should a lawn be aerated?

Most lawns on heavy soil benefit from it once a year. Lawns with light traffic and looser soil can go longer. We check the soil and the thatch layer before recommending it.

What is the difference between aeration and dethatching?

Aeration pulls plugs out of the soil to relieve compaction underneath. Dethatching removes the dead mat sitting on top of the soil. Many lawns need both, and we handle each of them.

Should I leave the soil plugs on the lawn?

Yes, leave them. They break down within a couple of weeks and work organic matter back into the surface. Raking them up throws away part of the benefit you just paid for.

How long before new seed comes up?

Most grass seed starts showing in about two to three weeks when soil temperatures cooperate. Filling in fully takes longer, and keeping the surface moist through that stretch matters most.

Can I mow after aeration and overseeding?

Wait until the new grass is tall enough to cut, then mow high and keep the blade sharp. We tell you when to start again based on how the seed is coming in.

Will overseeding fix bare patches?

It fills in thin turf well. Truly bare spots often need the cause fixed first, whether that is shade, drainage, or damage, so we look at why the patch is bare before seeding it.
